Since last few days, I was just curious to know what’s the meaning of our national anthem. So just went ahead & found out. What was unexpected to find is that this was actually composed to be sung in the honor of the King George V by Rabindranath Tagore, when he was to be given the Imperial Crown of India. Originally, it was written in Sanskritized Bengali.
Here is the meaning of each line:
Jana Gana Mana Adhinayak Jaya he, Bharat Bhagya Vidhata - O! Dispenser of India’s Destiny, you are the ruler of the minds of all people.
Punjab Sindh Gujarat Maratha, Dravida Utkala Banga - Your name excites the hearts of Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat & Maratha country, in the Dravida, Utkala & Bengal.
Vindhya Himachala Yamuna Ganga, Utkala Jaladhi Tarang - It echoes in the hills of the Vindhyas & Himalayas. It mingles in the pure waters of Yamuna & Ganga.
Tava Shubh Name Jaage, Tava Shubh Ashish Maange - They sing only your name, they seek your auspicious blessings.
Gahe Tava Jaya Gatha - They seek only your victory.
Jana Gana Mangaldayak Jaya he, Bharat Bhagya Vidhata - You are the savior of all people. India’s destiny is in your hands, you are the ruler of the minds of all people.
Jaya he, Jaya he, Jaya he, Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya he - Victory to you…
People have been saying that Vande Mataram should be our National Anthem given that ‘Jana Gana Mana’ was composed for King George V. However, It’s also true that whenever we sing ‘Jana Gana Mana’, it arises a feeling of pride & patriotism in our hearts & runs shivers through our body.
Though after knowing the meaning, whenever I will sing the anthem, it will make me feel conscious as to for whom I am singing it. Something strange…but can’t change it.
